Martin Parr
Inquire

Martin Parr (UK, b. 1952, Epsom, Surrey, UK) began developing an interest in photography as a child, encouraged by his grandfather, George Parr, an amateur photographer. He studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973, and is now one of the most significant photographers of our time, renowned for his sharp and ironic documentation of contemporary society. With his unmistakable visual language, saturated colors, bold compositions, and a keen eye for the absurd, Parr explores themes of leisure, consumption, tourism, and cultural identity in the age of globalization. His images, often humorous and unsettling at once, offer a mirror to how we live, how we present ourselves, and what we value.

Since then, the artist has worked on numerous photographic projects and joined Magnum Photos as a full member in 1994. His practice extends across photography, filmmaking, fashion, and advertising, often focusing on everyday life and visual culture.

In 1999, Parr’s project Common Sense was shown simultaneously at 41 venues around the world, earning a Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous photography exhibition. A retrospective of his work, organized by the Barbican Art Gallery and the National Media Museum, toured Europe from 2002, followed by Parrworld (2008–2010), which combined his own work with items from his personal collection.

Parr has held academic positions at the University of Wales and the University of Ulster and was president of Magnum Photos from 2013 to 2017. He has curated several major exhibitions, including Strange and Familiar at the Barbican (2016), and was guest artistic director of Rencontres d’Arles in 2004.

In 2017, he opened the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. Among his recognitions are the Erich Salomon Prize (2006), the Sony World Photography Award for Outstanding Contribution to Photography (2017), a CBE in 2021, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from La Gacilly-Baden Photo Festival in 2024.

Parr has published over 120 books of his own work and edited more than 30. His work is held in major international collections, including Tate (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), among others. He is also a long-standing member of Magnum Photos.
